Alessi's success lies in its ability to collaborate with some of the most talented designers from around the world. Inventor, creator, architect, designer, artistic director, Philippe Starck is certainly all of the above, but more than anything else he is an honest man directly descended from the Renaissance artists. I encountered said lemon squeezer on my very first day working with the collection and its design stuck with me, and I could not stop thinking about it. Open Access data and public domain images are available for unrestricted commercial and noncommercial use without permission or fee.

The juice then flows down along the side edges of the tapered body and is finally concentrated by the pointed end straight into the drinking glass. While eating a dish of squid and squeezing a lemon over it, Starck drew on the napkin his famous lemon squeezer. There has also been a grey/black ( anthracite) coloured version, of which 47,000 un-numbered examples were produced between 1991 and 2004. Good thing that design star Philippe Starck had a napkin at hand to record his idea right in the pizzeria where it occurred to him!The iconic Alessi Philipps Starck Juicer - also known as the 'Juicy Salif' has to be one of the most recognisable items from the Alessi range. A truly iconic object and symbol, not only of Philippe Starck but of Alessi itself, this citrus squeezer - as revolutionary as it is surprisingly functional - was sketched in its essentials by Starck during a holiday by the sea in Italy, on a pizzeria napkin. Starck's designs are frequently mysterious in their ambiguity—their purpose is not always at once identifiable. The company specialises in the design and production of authentic Italian-inspired kitchenware, tableware, cookware, glassware and home decorations.

Celebrated by some and criticised by others the Juicy Salif certainly serves its purpose as a tool that's "not meant to squeeze lemons, but meant to start conversations" which is what Starck supposedly described it as. For instance, their "Juicy Salif" citrus squeezer, designed by Philippe Starck, resembles a spaceship rather than a traditional kitchen tool. For design enthusiasts who want to have fun, feeling like Alice in a world of great huge design objects, to impress with a decidedly unconventional piece of furniture: Juicy Salif has never been a bigger icon. Juicy Salif, a citrus reamer designed by Philippe Starck in 1990, is considered an icon of industrial design, and has been displayed in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art [1] and the Metropolitan Museum of Art [2] in New York City, as well as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In almost a century of history, the company has gradually evolved to become one of the leading "Factories of Italian design", capable of applying its expertise and excellence in design management to many different product types.Over the years, the brand has partnered with renowned names like Philippe Starck, Alessandro Mendini, and Stefano Giovannoni, among others. The Juicy Salif by Philippe Starck has become an absolute design classic that many of us have become familiar with. Philippe Starck, world famous creator with multifaceted inventiveness, is always focused on the essential, his vision: that creation, whatever form it takes, must improve the lives of as many people as possible.

The resultis a surprising, poetic and subversive object, which integrates the usual parameters of creationunder a new prism.

Born in Granerolo, Verbania, in 1916, Carlo Alessi studied technical design at the OMAR institute in Novara. Starck became one of the most famous designers of that time and designed everything from apartment blocks, homes, domestic products and hotels. Classic/Fantastic: Selections from the Modern Design Collection," December 21, 2007–April 5, 2009, no catalogue. The Product Sustainability Framework, our criteria of sustainable design, helps you find the most sustainable products in our selection.

A design classic by Philippe Starck straight from the 90s - the landed spaceship; more a sculpture than a lemon juicer. It is beautiful to look at while being eerily reminiscent of a Martian tripod from "The War of the Worlds".The thousands of projects - complete or forthcoming - his global fame and tireless protean inventiveness should never distract from Philippe Starck's fundamental vision: Creation, whatever form it takes, must improve the lives. The brand is conscious of its environmental impact and strives to reduce waste and energy consumption in its manufacturing processes. Besides squeezing lemons, the primary function of the unconventional, sculptural citrus squeezer is to start conversations. It is the most controversial squeezer of the century I must say, but one of the most amusing projects I have done in my career. Alessi is a renowned Italian brand that has become synonymous with elegant and innovative design in the field of home and kitchenware.
