About this deal

The other design change is the new flush fit that changes out the old padding on the bridge for something a bit more cushiony. This makes these over-ear headphones more comfortable, and less dorky-looking when they’re on your head. Sony’s also deepened the earcup and changed out the silver accents on the side of the headphones for a stylish copper tone instead. The final design change of note comes in the form of an IPX4 rating. This means the WF-1000XM4 can withstand water splashes from any direction so they’re a much better choice than the WF-1000XM3, which had no such protection, for trips to the gym and listening in all weather. dB/mW (1 kHz) (when connecting via the headphone cable with the unit turned on) / 101 dB/mW (1 kHz) (when connecting via the headphone cable with the unit turned off) the touch controls are good, but if you are in wired mode (eg sitting on a plane for 14 hours plugged into their movies) then they no longer work. They only one that does work is putting your hand over the RH cup to mute the sound. Physical buttons would have been better, but how old fashioned.

Much like their predecessors, the Sony WH-1000XM3 are premium wireless over-the-ear headphones. They have active noise cancellation (ANC), Bluetooth and near-field communication (NFC) connectivity. Customisation – The Sony Headphone App makes the XM3 fully customisable when it comes to sound. But the Bose comes in more colours. The WF-1000XM4 deliver the goods in the sound quality department as well. Like their predecessors, they communicate dynamics in an enthralling fashion. But they nail every other important element of musical presentation, too. The headphones shed about 1 ounce (22 grams) off their predecessors' design. That might not seem like a big deal, but considering you’ll be wearing these for an extended period of time like, say, a transcontinental flight, every ounce helps.

As far as cutting edge headphones go, the key match-up here is the Sony WH-1000XM3 vs Bose QuietComfort 35 II. Both are advanced wire-free devices with excellent sound quality, and both incorporate what the manufacturers claim are path-breaking noise cancellation technologies. That's why the QC35 is part of the “Quiet Comfort” collection. The Sony WH-1000XM3 were one of the finest noise-cancelling headphones around when they first launched, and heading in 2023 they still offer an excellent performance at a terrific price. Design The last aspect of performance worth analyzing is the 1000XM3’s call quality. In several phone calls made with the headphones, the people we spoke to reported that we sounded clear – if a bit quieter – than if we had used the phone’s built-in microphone. This is likely due to the extra microphones Sony has embedded into the headphones themselves. Microphone Quality – The XM3 has a better microphone set up than the Bose, meaning better call quality.

A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio Video Remote Control Profile), HSP (Headset Profile), HFP (Hands Free Profile) Each iteration of the 1000X has improved on what came before, but Sony hit gold dust with the WH-1000XM3 combining excellent sound and noise cancellation into a formidable headphone.Connecting headphones to a PS4 - If you've got hold of a pair of wireless headphones and want to link them to a PS4, doing so is problematic. The company chose not to include wireless headphone standards as a default option, owing to the lag time between earphones and the gaming console. There are workarounds, generally involving the use of an audio cable between your headphones and the console. But this defeats the purpose of having wireless headphones, making wired versions a better option for gamers (at the moment). It’s a system that takes some getting used to, but once you use it for a week it becomes second nature. Performance You can also choose how long you want it to remain active after speech to ensure the mode doesn’t close mid-conversation. The “short” (five seconds) and “standard” (15 seconds) options felt a little restrictive to me, but 30 seconds proved ample. If you’ve got a particularly chatty partner or friend you can choose to prevent the mode from shutting down automatically and manually end it by touching either of the earbuds. So both headphones offer sensational noise-cancelling, and both feature 40mm drivers – but what about serious audio ability? Are the XM4 worth the extra money? In word, yes, and here's why...

On a basic level, Sony 1000XM3 headphones are another set of wireless headphones. But that only applies until you slip them on and listen to music in crowded environments. Here are the key features that set the XM3s apart from the competition.

The Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds are the complete package, offering first-rate sound quality, effective ANC and numerous useful features

It is very disappointing that you cannot use the equalizer with the high quality LDAC Bluetooth codec.I hope that Sony will solve this very bad issue soon.

Battery life and charging may be more important factors. Unfortunately, even the best wireless models require charging and are vulnerable to losing charge at inconvenient moments. That's something wired headphones don't suffer from, which means they tend to be preferable for using at desks or around the home. Then again, wireless models are superior for active audio fans who prize mobility and flexibility. If that sounds like you, investing in headphones with industry-leading charging and battery times is a no-brainer. So Sony will be a good brand to choose. However, the XM4 take sound quality to another level, producing a wider soundstage and uncovering even more layers of detail than the XM3. Want the next level of performance? Sony WH-1000XM5 vs WH-1000XM4: which headphones should you buy? The Sony WF-1000XM4 use the same adaptive sound control technology as the WH-1000XM4 and it works supremely well. It works consistently well and can be customised to suit your needs. Out of the box, voice detection sensitivity adjusts automatically based on your environment, but you can choose low or high sensitivity if you find this doesn’t work for you.

Being able to customise how much sound makes its way into your ears in those four scenarios is very useful, and the noise cancellation on offer is top drawer. It isn’t quite class-leading – Bose’s QuietComfort Earbuds still hold that crown – but it was able to drown out a sizable chunk of the noise on a busy train full of jubilant England football fans, which is no mean feat.
